Surprising as it may seem, there is still a pool of people who do not see the value of continuing education. The changing job market is causing some adults to pay more attention to this issue. It is seen as a way to help them keep their jobs or enable them to land another job if they get laid off.

For some people continuing education is much more than a means of keeping a job or even for promotion. For them it is a way to keep abreast of changes in their chosen career field. As with everything else there are always new technology and ways of doing things. Continuing education is one of the most popular ways to keep up-to-date with improvements.

For others, it is the opportunity to learn something new. Sometimes this can lead to new career choices. This career change could even take place in the same company. Some persons have used the knowledge gained in continuing education classes to move up the career ladder.

There are many people who just enjoy learning. Not only does it give them something to do, but it also satisfies their intellectual interests. The more knowledgeable someone is, the better they are in social situations. They are able to hold conversations with people on a wide array of topics.

One of the good things about continuing education is the variety of topics covered. There are classes on financial management which can have positive results for personal as well as business life. It can be on topics such as child-rearing or computer repairs.

Simply put, continuing education is one of the keys to success. It shows to others that you are trainable, and better yet, willing to learn.

Using Adult Education as a Stepping Stone

Adult Education (song)

Image via Wikipedia

Adult education refers to programs geared specifically towards adults. They can be offered by places of employment to bring workers up to speed with updated technology or new techniques. They are also offered by educational institutions such as colleges and universities. In this sense it is the same as continuing education.

In another sense it can also refer to any program geared towards helping improve the literacy and numeracy levels of adults. When used in this way, the aim is to help adults gain their high school diploma using GED.

Whichever area of adult education is looked at, it can serve as a stepping stone to other things.

Positives of Adult Education

There are many positives that can be gleamed from returning to the classroom as an adult. Some areas where being older when they return to the classroom are beneficial are:

  • Life experiences can sometimes make them a better student as they can better relate to certain situations. This makes it easier to grasp some subjects or tasks.
  • Since no one generally forces them to attend classes, they are more motivated to attend and do well. In most cases, adults who return to school want to learn something new.
  • The things they learn can sometimes be parlayed into a new career. Many adults have used adult and continuing education as a route to more fulfilling second and third careers.

Because adults generally know what they want, successfully using adult education to achieve their goals is easy. Since many adults have family and other obligations, they can use online learning outlets. This makes it easier to select programs that suit their schedule.
